Lactation Care

Lisa  provides unique care as a Lactation Consultant who is licensed to order lab work, diagnose conditions and treat with medication due to her license and certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife.

Her lactation services are based on the founding principle that breastfeeding is the natural way to feed our children. She also realizes that it may not always come easy and it is imperative for moms to feel supported. Her aim is to:

  • Provide unbiased education and preparation for breastfeeding
  • Offer guidance and reassurance for the breastfeeding journey
  • Optimize challenging breastfeeding situations
  • Empower families to reach their own personal feeding goals and
  • Normalize breastfeeding in our culture and society

Lisa treats many common lactation issues such as:
  • breastfeeding preparation- what to expect the first few weeks
  • regulation of milk supply, low milk supply, re-lactation
  • nipple/breast pain or infection (clogged ducts, nipple blebs, mastitis)
  • engorgement/edema of breast
  • latch issues
  • colic, reflux, “gassy” behavior in the newborn
  • infant expressing mom’s food intolerances (elimination diets, food intolerance testing)
  • herbal supplementation/vitamins/nutrition for lactation

What is an IBCLC?

IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. An IBCLC is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. This is the highest recognized standard for lactation care, requiring years of experience, education and documentation of competency. There are many other types of lactation assistants (CLC, CBE, CBE, CLE, etc)  but they are not substitutes for an IBCLC who is a clinical professional.

What to expect during a consult:

Expect to spend at least an hour in our private and comfortable office.  Lisa takes the time to gather your health history, hear the story of your pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding experience, and explore your goals. If needed, an exam of yourself and infant (including weight) are part of the consultation. Lisa will observe your nursing and provide suggestions to optimize your comfort, improve infant’s milk transfer, and learn how to tell when infant is swallowing and feeding. Please come with your partner, mother, sister, or friend. It helps when those closest to you understand how breastfeeding works and how to support you. If it is possible, don’t feed the baby right before the visit, but don’t worry if the timing doesn’t work out. If you are feeding anything other than your milk, or are using any lactation aids, have these with you.  No pillows, carriages or carseats are needed for our visit.

Call for an appointment today.

Lisa is currently in network with Fidelity, 1199 and Tricare. For all others, a superbill will be provided for you to submit for reimbursement for out of network coverage.
